Local businesses supporting other businesses! Our

Local businesses supporting other businesses! Our friends at @liokareas and @therefilleryxthelocal happened to pick up their respective orders at the same time today!

As you might already know, we use Liokareas olive oil for all soap manufacturing and send empty drums/bottles back to their South Hills location. Trail Botanica manufactures their soap for them in a cobranding project. They include our delivery or pickup (often both) with their delivery route to local restaurants. It feels good to have shared sustainable growth over the years!

Recently opened The Refillery started purchasing our products just before their storefront opened in Squirrel Hill. Because they're just a few miles away, we're able to coordinate local pickup or dropoff each time. It's amazing to have a retail storefront so close to home that is committed to reducing waste.

Don't mind the boxes - they were reused with fresh liner paper inside.

Both of these businesses are sustainable, indepedently owned and local to Pittsburgh!

Access isn't a given, it takes work AND maintenance. This team effort means that we include folks who aren't represented, whether that is because they aren't comfortable in the wildnerness or haven't really begun exploring it yet. I'm one of those people who isn't comfortable, but that's mostly because there aren't a lot of people who look like me out there, and the folks who are out there often say and do things that make it seem like I don't belong.

Nature reminds me that I do belong. As do so many other folks.

The strength of an ecosystem often lies in its diversity. With use of public parks, it is much the same and over the years we have encouraged people of all ages, skin color and gender to respect the trails, and create opportunities for visibility. There are a handful of women in the trail community, whether as user or steward. It is a small percentage of the overall representation, and smaller still including people of color. And still yet, there are more minorities in sexuality, disability and SO MANY more - that don't have representation in the outdoors and are inherently excluded.

This is definitely an old photo, taken by fellow trail steward @dirtgragg (maybe 2019?), who is currently living that dream life out in 'RADo. I appreciate that my image was worth capturing to help demonstrate the importance of trail maintenance in a place that is important to me.

I may not be mobile at the moment, but I can't wait to get back out there, overcome my uncomfortableness, and claim my space.

Along with high quality and excellent safety records, we look for ingredient manufacturers who have a diverse staff, offer fair pay and practice responsible harvesting to maintain that triple bottom line. Not everything is available locally, but we strive to look for those options whenever possible.
